Coconut Oil – King of the Oils

Walk into most people’s bathrooms and you will see a stack of cosmetic products, everything from face creams to hair gel, deodorant to moisturiser.

Is there really any need for all those products and mCOCONUTore importantly, are they any good for your health?

Coconut Oil as the world is finding out, isn’t just for cooking. Coconut oil can also be used as a body or facial moisturiser, and it’s my moisturiser of choice. Every morning after my shower I will apply it all over my body, it leaves me feeling fresh and rejuvenated and my skin feels soft and smooth. Like some moisturisers it doesn’t leave your skin oily and it quickly relieves you of dry flakey skin.

Not only is it highly effective as an all natural moisturiser, but at £11.99 for 500ml for my favourite brand Coconutty RAW Organic Coconut Oil it’s pretty cost effective option as well, as a little goes a long way!

What most people don’t know is that Coconut Oil boosts collagen production which keeps the wrinkles at bay and not only is it a great moisturiser, but it can also be used as a natural sun screen too. Providing the equivalent protection to a factor 6 sun screen, Coconut oil also doubles as a powerful after sun cream that will heal any burns and help prevent peeling.

In fact if you’re going abroad this year it is the ultimate holiday product, as it literally does everything you could want. When mixed with baking soda it can be used as a natural toothpaste due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties. It can be used as a natural deodorant, as the lauric acid in coconut oil kills odour causing bacteria, you can even use it as a natural hair styling product. Just apply a small amount to your hair and you can style it to the look you want. Used overnight, Coconut oil is a wonderful natural conditioner to promote healthy, shiny hair.

And then there is cooking. When it comes to health some oils get a bad reputation, when they are actually health promoting when used correctly. Other oils are promoted as healthy, when they are no better than poison (Canola/Rapeseed).

Coconut Oil is known to be the best cooking oil as it is extremely stable when heated, unlike vegetable oils, which are highly susceptible toCOCONUT OIL heat and oxidative damage.

It is perfect for Mum’s cooking a healthy stir fry for the family. Or for Dad’s cooking the Sunday morning fry-up. I myself use it in my sweet potatoes mash, or even to bake cakes should I choose to. Coconut oil is a wonderfully healthy alternative to butter or other oils you may currently use.

It’s benefits don’t stop there either. Coconut oil can also help to heal your gut should you have any digestive issues (which unfortunately a huge percentage of the population now do). It is abundant in anti-microbial fats, which have potent anti-viral, anti fungal and anti-parasitic properties and therefore make it a truly wonderful choice for anyone with leaky gut issues, candida or immune system disorders.

Also because of it’s high source of Medium Train Triglycerides, (MCT’s), which are converted in to energy and not stored as fat, it helps the body to increase the metabolism, which can result in fat loss and weight reduction. The knock on effect of this is that it helps in supporting the healthy functioning of the thyroid gland, so it’s a great option for people with thyroid issues.
